Bolton's Transfer Woes: Schumacher Seeks Frantic Finish

Bolton Wanderers manager Steven Schumacher is predicting a frantic end to the transfer window, with the club still lacking a recognised right winger and only one senior centre-forward in Sam Dalby. The lack of attacking signings has prompted concern across the fanbase, though it is understood a £1 million-plus cash offer has gone in to Belgian side Gent for their 22-year-old striker Max Dean.

Schumacher said last week that he wanted "four or five" new signings before the deadline on September 3, and he is hopeful that at least one player can be added to the squad by the time his side kick off the Championship season against Preston North End next weekend. Bolton are expected to have one of the lowest playing budgets in the division next season – which has been a factor in their struggle to add to the squad.

But Schumacher insists other factors have also presented hurdles, not least the summer's World Cup finals. He understands fans' frustrations but is confident he can still finish up with a competitive squad. "This hasn't come as a surprise to me because I've seen it before," he told The Bolton News. "I have been in this situation before where we certainly had the lowest budget going into the Championship with Plymouth Argyle, so we're right there.

"I've seen it before and it is what it is, you've got to be smart and be diligent, get the right personalities, get people you think are undervalued if you can, and bring them to the club if you think they can help you. That part of it hasn't surprised me, but I think what has made an impact as well is the World Cup, it takes a bit of time for everything to filter down, certainly with loan players.

"Players that clubs are trying to recruit are waiting, so when those loan players or Premier League players do become available there will be a knock-on effect - and then I'm sure towards the end of the window you'll see it really ramp up." Schumacher admits he would have liked to have more attacking players on board by now but he has drawn encouragement from the improvement shown by his existing squad over the summer.
