Preston North End have progressed to the second round of the Carabao Cup following a 4-3 penalty shootout with Huddersfield Town, after a 1-1 draw in normal time. Captain Lewis Gibson received a red card on 21 minutes for a foul on Ashley Fletcher. Radino Balker opened the scoring on 37 minutes after a bullet header from a Lasse Sorensen free kick.
What happened?
Preston North End started brightly and Callum Lang tried his luck inside the opening minute. A headed ball by Jordan Thompson allowed Lang to open his body up and shoot, but his effort fell wide of the mark. Chances were few and far between in the following 20 minutes, until Gibson was shown a red card for a professional foul on Fletcher.
Why it matters for Preston
The Terriers' confidence, unsurprisingly, grew from that point on. From the free kick awarded alongside the sending off, Fletcher hit the woodwork after a ball in from Sorensen. That, along with an effort from Balker five yards from goal, gave PNE a scare. Martin Drury's side continued to be effective in set piece situations and ultimately it got them the opener.
What comes next?
North End improved after the break and Lang was at the centre of several promising PNE moves. He and his teammates felt a penalty should have been awarded in his favour after a push in the back from a Terriers defender, but those calls were waved away before Jack Whatmough blocked an effort from the edge of the area. Erabi and Burgzorg entered the fray with 20 left to go and made a decent impact, the pair combining to force a Terrier into a strong block.
Preston North End are currently 14th in the Championship, with 60 points from 46 games, and are 35 points behind leaders Coventry. They have scored 55 goals and conceded 62 this season. Their next fixture is against Stoke City at home on January 23, 2027.
