Jordan Thompson has called for a rapid improvement in Preston North End’s pressing and defensive organisation as they prepare for a key trip to Wrexham. The stand-in captain’s comments follow a 4-0 defeat away to Birmingham City on Tuesday that left the club rock bottom of the Championship.
Thompson was blunt in his assessment of the performance at St Andrew’s. He said the squad had reviewed the game internally and were disappointed, but stressed the need to move forward and play on the front foot.
Looking ahead to Wrexham
Under new manager Graham Alexander, Thompson says the instruction is clear: be aggressive and attack. The midfielder admitted they may have jumped out of position when they shouldn't have and emphasised the need to stay in shape.
The task does not get any easier. Preston travel to the Racecourse Ground on Saturday sitting 24th in the Championship with just four points from ten games. Their recent form reads five defeats and one draw from the last six, including consecutive losses to Millwall and Birmingham.
With a sold-out away allocation making the journey to north Wales, the team knows the importance of a response. Thompson said football offers another chance to make things right quickly. Preston’s next opportunity comes this weekend against a Wrexham side currently placed 17th. Check the details of that fixture and what follows on our fixtures schedule.
